Exciting news about a Performance celebrating the life and work of Mary Webb.
In All My Holy Mountain performed by poet Roger Garfitt, Nicky Isles and The John Williams Octet was commissioned by the Arts Council and first performed at the Leasowes Bank Music festival in 1998. A CD is now available at www.restringingthelyre.wordpress.com
This an extract from a review by poet John Mole:
“For me the surprise, as I listened to this collaborative celebration was how suited the life and work of the romantic novelist is to contemporary jazz idiom.
One might have expected something of a clash between the rural and the urban but throughout In All My Holy Mountain, landscape and soundscape combined beautifully, thanks to the poet’s and musicians’ attention to each other.
Above all, this is a small triumph of imagination and sensitivity. Roger Garfitt’s poetry shares and complements Mary Webb’s close observation of the natural world, often in luminous detail”.
