The Mary Webb Society

This Summer School concentrated on Mary’s 2nd novel ‘Gone to Earth’.

Gladys Mary welcomed us with her talk entitled ‘Aspects of Gone To Earth’ which included characterisation,
landscape setting & folklore, this was followed by question and answer time.

After our lunch provided by the Stiperstones Inn we held a group discussion on the following themes:-

  1. Use of folklore
  2. Contrast & similarity in Reddin & Marston
  3. Religious belief and unbelief
  4. Hazel Woodus – A Pure Woman?
  5. The Landscape & Natural world as a presence in the novel
  6. Humour

In the afternoon we were entertained by society member Nigel Sustins who read his superbly written narrative poem entitled ‘The Devil’s Kin’.

The early evening entertainment was a showing of the film ‘Gone To Earth’ starring Jennifer Jones, Cyril Cusack & George Cole.

On the Sunday Gordon met members back at Snailbeach Village Hall for a conducted walk in the Stiperstones area including Lord’s Hill Chapel (used in the film) and the newly restored miners cottages in Blakemore Gate, then on to the Devil’s Chair for a picnic lunch after returning to the hall for a welcome cup of tea before leaving for home.

Took place on Saturday, June 21, 2014, at Snailbeach Village Hall, Shropshire
