August promises to be another interesting month for the society with joint events with at first, seemingly unlikely groups, but think again because aspects of Mary Webb’s work appeal to all who appreciate her beautiful literary works and her landscape. Our theme of celebrating the centenary of the publication of Gone to Earth this year continues, as well as the making of the much-loved film.
The first event run jointly with Shropshire Heritage Railway Trust will take place on Sunday 6th August at The Abbey Station, Abbey Foregate, Shrewsbury.
There will be displays from The Mary Webb Society andĀ the Railway Trust. The exhibition will include “then and now” film locations, following extensive research deep into the Shropshire countryside. There will also be an impressive display of period vehicles and static machines in the adjoining Abbey Foregate car park. Our next event held jointly with the Railway Trust & County of Salop Steam Engine Society will be held on Sunday 27th August at Onslow Park, situated on the A458 Shrewsbury to Welshpool Road SY3 5EE. The Mary Webb Anniversary is part of its annual SteamĀ Rally weekend which will appeal to all the family. They are hoping to recreate some of the county fair atmosphere from the film and you are invited to dress in period costume! There will also be a screening of the film of Gone to Earth by Flicks in the Sticks. For more information see the link below.
Please support these events. It is an exciting development for us to be involved in these diverse community events.
