The Annual Birthday Lunch Event on Saturday 26th March 2022

at Leighton Village hall, Leighton, Shropshire SY5 7PP

The programme for the day will include talks by Professor Deborah Wynne and Dr Gladys Mary Coles, Society president.

After lunch we will walk across the road to Leighton Lodge, birthplace of Mary Webb (nee Meredith) on 25th March 1881. We shall be unveiling a commemorative blue plaque on the house and presenting a rose to the owners Kate and Jim. It is a pleasure to know that this house, so significant in Mary’s life is once again a family home. We are grateful to Kate and Jim for their interest and enthusiasm for this event and the Mary Webb association with their home. After the unveiling we will visit St Mary’s church where Mary was baptised and will be treated to a performance of “Shropshire lass” by local soprano, Holly Teague, accompanied by Michael Matthews. We will round off the day back at the village hall for birthday cake and a cuppa, a chance to chat, share memories and enjoy the special friendship of a Mary Webb Society gathering, and it looks like the sun will be shining too!
