We are so pleased to announce the latest event in our alliance with the Mary Webb School and Science College, Pontesbury, Shropshire. The society has set up the annual presentation of the Writer of the Year award. The idea for the award was initiated by the desire to commemorate the memory of the late Mary Palmer of Much Wenlock. Mary was a prominent, hard-working and much-loved member. The project was strongly supported by Rob Garry, Head of English and the Head, Mr Lowe-Werrall; we thank them both for their enthusiasm and commitment. The winner of the first Writer of the Year Award was Emily Willner for her impressive range of sonnets. The elegant trophy was presented to Emily in assembly on Wednesday 19th July. Committee members, Sue Hotchkiss, Anne Williams and Sue King represented the society and read out a message from society president, Dr Gladys Mary Coles congratulating Emily as a well deserving winner for “her outstanding submission of poems shaped by a remarkable command of form and language in sonnets in various complex forms”. She also congratulated the Mary Webb School on their recent Ofsted report. We look forward to maintaining and strengthening links with the school which bears Mary Webb’s name.
