The Mary Webb Society

The beautiful Mary Webb bust was unveiled on Saturday 9th July at 11.00 a.m. in front of an interested crowd and invited guests, and under the quizzical gaze of Charles Darwin in front of Shrewsbury library. The bust was unveiled by Dr Gladys Mary Coles assisted by Juliette Binfield and Lucille Rennie, great nieces of Mary Webb and Shirley Meredith with daughter Angela. Shirley was the wife of Mary Webb’s nephew, the late Ian Meredith. The family of Muriel Furbank was also represented. Without Muriel’s generous legacy this project would not have been possible. Val Littlehales read Mary’s poem “The Elf” “A fair town is Shrewsbury-The world over…”

The clouds rolled away and the sun shone to reveal the beautiful bronze bust created by Jemma Pearson. The elegant carved Grinshill stone column was created by Will and Lottie O’Leary. Jemma has captured the image and spirit of Mary Webb perfectly. She now stands serenely in a perfect location for all to enjoy.

This was  history in the making and it was a privilege to be a part of it. Thanks to all involved in finally making this dream a reality.
